Peter Downie

A/Prof Peter Downie is a paediatric haematologist-oncologist at Monash Children’s Hospital, and the Royal Childrens Hospital, Melbourne. He was Head of Paediatric Haematology-Oncology and Director of the Children’s Cancer Centre at Monash Children’s Hospital for 30 years, and is a senior consultant in paediatric oncology at Monash Children’s Hospital, and the Royal Children’s Hospital, Melbourne. A/Prof Downie’s early research focused on the effects of chemotherapy on fertility in pre-pubertal boys. He is currently the Chair of the Victorian Childhood Cancer Outcomes Registry (VCCOR), which is being established to provide data, and as a research tool, on childhood cancer survivors across Victoria. He is a member of the leadership group for the Hudson Institute Paediatric Cancer Precision Medicine Program, focussing on brain cancers and solid tumours. A/Prof Downie has previously held the positions of Chair of the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Oncology Group (ANZCHOG), member of the Australian Children’s Cancer Trials executive, Medical Director of the Victorian Paediatric Integrated Cancer Service, and member of the Scientific Council for Cancer Council Victoria. A/Prof Downie is currently Medical Director of the PICS State-wide Long Term Follow-up Program, for survivorship following childhood cancer. He has been recognised as a Member of the Order of Australia for his services to paediatric cancer medicine.
