The changing financial circumstances that follow a cancer diagnosis can be a primary driver of financial toxicity for many Australians. However, this aspect of financial toxicity in cancer is relatively understudied, and as the solutions predominantly reside outside of health, can be a challenging area for health care professionals and people affected by cancer to navigate. COSA’s Roadmap to Reducing Financial Toxicity Experienced by People Affected by Cancer identifies the need to create supportive work environments and financial protections through reform. But what do the reform options look like in Australia, and how could they create greater equity and accessibility to employment and income security, thus reducing financial toxicity for people affected by cancer? This presentation will preview the work of the COSA Survivorship Group’s newest Fellow, looking at the options to enhance job and income security to mitigate the risk of financial toxicity, and discuss what will be needed to see reform to reducing the experience of financial toxicity become a reality.
